I keep running into this concept called Coast FIRE
Hey everyone, I’ve been thinking a lot lately about early retirement, and I keep running into this concept called Coast FIRE. From what I gather, it's about saving a certain amount early and letting compound interest take over so you don't need to keep investing later on. Sounds great in theory, but I’m struggling to figure out how much I actually need to save now to make that work. Anyone here doing this? I’m 30, hoping to step back around 55. Would really appreciate some practical insights or tools that helped you figure it out.

I'm actually working toward Coast FIRE myself, and I totally get where you're coming from. That "how much is enough" question is the hardest part. The idea is to frontload your investments so they can coast over the next few decades while you just cover your living expenses. But the exact number depends on so many things: your desired retirement age, expected expenses, current savings, and even the return rate you're assuming.
I found this really helpful calculator that breaks everything down based on your numbers — it actually shows you the exact amount you need to save now to “coast” to retirement backofnapkin.co : . It lets you input your age, retirement goal, current savings, etc. and gives you a very personalized target. When I ran mine, it turned out I needed around $120K invested now to stop contributing completely and still hit my FIRE target by 55. That felt both intimidating and motivating, if that makes sense. I'd definitely recommend giving it a try and playing with the assumptions to see what moves the needle most for you.

I’m in a similar spot, also eyeing a 55-ish soft retirement. I messed around with a few Coast FIRE calculators and that one Sarah mentioned is solid. Just be careful with inflation assumptions — I tweaked mine a bit because 7% returns aren’t always guaranteed, you know? For me, focusing on maxing my Roth IRA and avoiding lifestyle creep helped more than hitting a specific number perfectly. Good luck, Tom! Let us know what number you land on.
