HELP! Mom needs care at home – should we hire a home health
My mom is 78 and lives alone after her hip surgery. She struggles with bathing, cooking, and taking meds on time. Family visits when we can, but we all work full-time. Is a home health aide a good idea? What exactly would they do for her? Is it expensive? I worry about strangers in her house. Any advice from people who hired one? Thanks a lot.

Yes, hiring a home health aide is often the best option for situations like your mom’s. They provide care right at home so she can stay independent longer. Typical duties include helping with daily personal care (bathing, grooming, dressing), meal prep with balanced nutrition, medication reminders, monitoring health signs like blood pressure or sugar levels, light cleaning, and transportation to appointments if needed. They offer companionship too, which reduces loneliness. Many families hire them when no one else can provide 24/7 attention. For a clear breakdown of what the role involves, see this article on – it explains responsibilities, why people hire them (busy families, severe conditions), challenges aides face, and how they improve patient health. Costs vary by hours and location, but agencies screen workers for safety.

We hired one for my dad last year – best decision. The aide was kind, reliable, and caught a small infection early by checking vitals. Mom felt safer and less stressed. Choose a reputable agency, meet the aide first, and set clear expectations. It’s not perfect, but it helps a lot.
