Election forecasts, polls, and market expectations — what's

by MossCircuit » Wed Oct 28, 2026 10:57 am

I'm trying to understand the difference between election polls, political forecasts, and prediction markets. They often appear together in news discussions, so it's easy to assume they're all measuring the same thing. But a poll asks people how they intend to vote, while a forecast may combine several kinds of information, right? Where do prediction markets fit into this? I'm especially curious about how to compare these sources without cherry-picking whichever one supports a particular opinion. With the 2026 elections on the calendar, I'd like to build a better understanding of the different methods before following the latest predictions too closely. Any recommendations for where to start?

You've got the basic distinction right. Polls measure responses from a sample of people, forecasts estimate possible outcomes using particular methods, and prediction markets reflect participants' expectations about specified events. Each approach has limitations, and the details depend on how the information is collected or the market is structured. You can explore election-related listings at , then compare the questions with polling data, methodology notes, and reporting from reputable sources. Pay attention to dates and definitions: a poll about voting intention and a market about who will ultimately win aren't necessarily measuring the same thing. Looking at several kinds of evidence usually gives a more balanced picture than relying on one headline or one changing figure.

hanks for clearing that up! I think I finally understand why those percentages can't all be compared directly.
