How Much Quoting Is Too Much in a Dissertation?

by oliver smith » Wed Jul 09, 2025 11:53 am

I’m currently revising my first draft and noticed I’ve used quite a few direct quotes from academic sources. Now I’m wondering—have I gone overboard?

I know that quoting can support an argument, but I also want to make sure my own voice doesn’t get lost. I recently read a blog about summarizing, paraphrasing, and quoting in academic writing, which explained how overusing quotes can weaken your analysis—even when fully cited.

It also introduced helpful options like AI free dissertation help and PhD thesis writers UK, which focus on guiding students to use sources correctly, not just add citations.

How do you decide when to quote, paraphrase, or summarize? Is there a rule you follow, or do you go with what feels natural?
