Online passport renewal

by laura32 » Mon Sep 08, 2025 7:39 am

Hello everyone. I decided to apply for a US passport renewal through the website and ran into a problem. I have already uploaded a photo twice, but the system does not accept it. The first time they wrote that the file size was too large, the second time - that the background did not match. Although I did everything at home, it seems, according to the instructions. Maybe someone has encountered something similar? I want to understand what to pay attention to first. Is it really impossible to do without a professional photo studio?

This situation is very common. The MyTravelGov online system immediately rejects photos if they do not meet the technical parameters. It is necessary to take into account that the photo must be square 600x600 px, in JPEG format and weigh no more than 240 KB. The background must be strictly white or very light, without shadows. The face takes up more than half of the frame, but not less than 50% and not more than 69%. Glasses, filters and processing are prohibited. I found a good resource where all the errors are described in detail and how to fix them - us digital passport photo requirements https://digital-passport-photo.com . I advise you to first crop the photo in the editor, then check it through the checklist. This really saves time and nerves.

I had the same problem. The first time the portal rejected the photo because I took it in HEIC format (from an iPhone). I had to re-save it in JPEG. It also turned out that my background was not completely white, but grayish. I put lamps on the sides and re-shot - only then was it accepted. So it is better to pay attention to details than to wait for a refusal later.
