Has anyone scaled PPC for finance beyond break-even?

I’ve been stuck on this question for a while, so I figured I’d throw it out here. A lot of people talk about PPC for finance like it’s either a gold mine or a money pit, but most of my own experience has lived right in the boring middle. Break even. Maybe a little up, maybe a little down. Nothing exciting. It made me wonder if scaling past that point is even realistic or if I was missing something obvious.

The main pain point for me was cost. Clicks are expensive, and leads don’t always behave the way you expect. I’d see traffic coming in, forms getting filled, and then… silence. Either the leads were low quality or they just didn’t convert into anything real. After a few rounds of this, I started questioning whether PPC for finance only works for big brands with huge budgets and teams.

At first, I tried what most people do. Broad keywords, simple ads, and a landing page that looked “good enough.” That setup burned cash fast. Then I went the opposite direction and got super strict with targeting. Fewer keywords, tighter copy, more filters. That helped control spend, but it also limited volume so much that scaling felt impossible. I was safer, but still stuck.

What slowly changed things wasn’t one magic trick, but a bunch of small adjustments. I noticed that intent mattered way more than traffic size. When I focused on people who were clearly looking for answers or comparisons instead of quick promises, the leads behaved better. I also stopped judging campaigns too early. Finance conversions can take time, and killing ads too fast sometimes meant cutting off the ones that would’ve worked later.

Another thing that helped was just reading how others approached it. Not sales pages or hype posts, but real breakdowns of what works and what doesn’t. One article that helped me rethink my setup was this breakdown on PPC for finance. It didn’t feel pushy, just practical, which is rare in this space.

I’m still not claiming I’ve cracked the code. Scaling PPC for finance feels more like slow progress than a big win. But I’ve learned it’s possible to move past break even if you’re patient, realistic, and willing to tweak instead of chasing shortcuts. Curious to hear if others here have seen the same thing or totally different results.
