How exactly does an ad blocker know which parts of a website

by swipka7 » Tue Feb 24, 2026 3:17 pm

How exactly does an ad blocker know which parts of a website are ads and which parts are normal content? Does it only rely on filter lists, or can it also detect ads automatically? I’m also wondering if using an ad blocker slows down the browser or actually makes it faster. Is it safe to use an ad blocker all the time, or can it cause problems with some websites?

Ad blockers identify advertisements mainly by using filter lists that contain rules for blocking known ad servers, scripts, and page elements that match typical advertising patterns. Many modern blockers also apply automatic detection methods that analyze page structure, script behavior, and network requests to recognize suspicious content that resembles ads or trackers. Because these unwanted elements are prevented from loading, pages often require less bandwidth and processing power, which can make browsing noticeably faster and smoother. However, some websites depend on scripts that may be blocked accidentally, so disabling the ad blocker for specific sites is sometimes necessary.

I started using an ad blocker for Mac a few months ago and it really changed how I browse. Pages feel cleaner and I don’t have banners jumping around all the time. It’s easier to read long posts without losing focus. My laptop also seems quieter because the fan runs less often. Sometimes I turn it off for sites I want to support. Overall I’m happy I gave it a try.
