Concerned About Grandma’s Mood

by joksen » Sat Feb 28, 2026 1:30 pm

Lately my grandma has been really forgetful and sometimes seems sad or anxious for no reason. I’m not sure if it’s just aging or something more. I heard geriatric psychiatry services can help with mental health for older adults. Can you recommend what kind of services would be best for her situation?

That sounds really tough — I went through something similar with my aunt who started getting confused and down out of nowhere. Watching someone you love change like that feels heavy. Geriatric psychiatry focuses on mental health in older adults, so they can help tease apart normal aging from things like depression, anxiety, or early memory issues. Services range from mood screening and cognitive assessments to tailored therapy and medication management if needed. What helped my aunt was a first step: a specialist did a full check-in and then suggested gentle memory support plus weekly check-ins that eased her anxiety about forgetting things. If you want a friendly, clear guide on what geriatric psychiatry looks at and how it might help, this page breaks it down well: geriatric psychiatry services . It made it easier for me to talk to her doctor about next steps.
