Ethical issues surrounding virtual relationships
Lately I’ve been thinking about how normal virtual relationships are becoming. A friend of mine recently told me he spends hours chatting with an AI girlfriend on wife.app, and he says it actually helps him feel less lonely after work. At first I laughed, but then I realized he was serious. He says he can customize the personality, the tone of conversations, even the emotional vibe. It made me wonder — where do we draw the line ethically? Is it harmless if it’s just text and algorithms, or could it slowly replace real connections? I’m not judging him at all, I’m just genuinely curious how others see this. Can virtual companionship be healthy, or does it risk creating unrealistic expectations about relationships?
