What are the practical ways to protect a brand online?
I’m helping with a small business that has recently started getting more attention online, and it made me realise that we’ve spent a lot of time building the brand but almost no time thinking about protecting it. We have the company name, logo, social media accounts and website, but I’m not sure what else should be on our checklist. For example, should we be monitoring mentions of the brand, registering trademarks, securing similar domain names, or doing something else entirely? I’d be interested to hear how other business owners approach brand protection without turning it into a huge legal project.

I think it helps to treat brand protection as several connected activities rather than one single task. Trademark registration is obviously important, but I’d also look at domain names, social media accounts, monitoring for misleading uses of the brand and keeping evidence of your legitimate use of the name and visual identity. It’s also worth having a basic process for dealing with impersonation, fake profiles or websites that could confuse customers. I recently read through this guide while reviewing our own approach, and it helped me organise the different areas instead of thinking only about trademarks. You don’t necessarily have to do everything at once; creating a priority list based on the markets and platforms most important to your business is a good starting point.

Thanks, that’s really useful. I was definitely thinking about trademarks in isolation, so the broader checklist gives me a much better starting point.
