What is an RFI? I need to know for an upcoming project

by daniel3112 » Sat Apr 19, 2025 8:04 pm

Hey guys, I’ve got a question. I’m working on a new project at work and I’ve been asked to send out a Request for Information (RFI). The problem is, I’m not really sure what that is or how to make one. I know it’s used to gather info from vendors, but what exactly should I be asking? I want to make sure I get all the right details to move forward with the project. Can anyone give me some insight into what an RFI actually entails?

That sounds like a useful but tricky task! I’ve heard about RFIs but never had to deal with them directly. I think it's about figuring out if a vendor can meet your needs, but I’m not sure what should go into the request or how formal it should be.

RFIs are super useful, especially when you’re comparing vendors for a project. What I didn’t know at first was that it's not just about asking random questions—it’s about being specific and clear. I struggled with that too until I came across this great article. It helped me understand the whole process—what to ask, what not to ask, and how to make your RFI effective. The post also includes templates, so you don’t have to start from scratch. It made writing mine way easier, and I bet it can help you too!
