What is Test Scenario in Negative Testing: Handling Unhappy

When we discuss what is test scenario, the first thing that comes to most minds is the "happy path"—the happy flow where everything should happen as expected. But in the real world, users are not always good rule followers, systems fail in unforeseen ways, and inputs are not always neat. That is where negative testing becomes important, and defining solid test scenarios becomes absolutely essential.

A negative test case for negative testing responds to the question: What should the system do when things fail? For example, what if a user puts in bad credentials? What if an API is fed a malformed payload? What if a network failure cuts off a transaction in progress? These are not nice scenarios, but they are all too real.

By defining test scenarios in terms of these "unhappy paths," teams can guarantee ahead of time that the system will respond gracefully—returning the correct error codes, avoiding data corruption, and never showing sensitive information. A well-crafted negative test scenario could look like this: "When a payment is made with an expired card, the system must reject it and record a correct error."
