Apps for Listening Practice

by Morger » Thu Jan 30, 2025 12:00 pm

I’ve been listening to podcasts to improve my English, but I feel like I’m not getting much out of them. Sometimes I zone out and realize I missed most of the conversation. What’s the best way to actively learn from podcasts instead of just passively listening?

Oh, I know that feeling too well! It’s so easy to zone out when you're just listening passively. One trick that worked for me was using transcripts alongside the audio — stopping every few minutes to repeat key phrases and mimic the speaker’s tone. Another helpful thing was blog.appewa.com/ which has practical strategies for making podcast listening more active. They even recommend how to pick podcasts based on your level. Also, setting specific goals helped — like focusing on learning five new phrases from each episode. I’d pause, rewind, and repeat until I felt comfortable saying them. What kind of podcasts do you usually listen to?

Mostly news and storytelling podcasts. I love the idea of using transcripts — thanks for the recommendation! I think having a specific goal like learning five new phrases would help me focus better during the podcasts. I’ll definitely give it a try. I’ll also pay attention to the pronunciation of words and practice them as I listen. Hopefully, this will make the podcasts more useful for improving my English!
