We struggled with this until discovering Clay's breakdown of mission characteristics . The key insight? The best mission statements serve as decision-making tools, not just marketing copy.
What transformed our approach was focusing on two aspects: clarity of purpose (could any employee explain it?) and directional value (does it help choose between opportunities?). We went from 50 generic words to 12 powerful ones that now guide everything from hiring to product roadmaps.
